Magnus Staveland

Tenor Magnus Staveland was born in Stavanger and studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo and the Opera Academy in Copenhagen. He has performed as a guest at the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet on several occasions, and starting in the fall of 2021, Staveland has been engaged as a permanent soloist in their ensemble. 

He has also had an international career as a concert singer, opera singer, and in CD recordings. He has performed at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, La Fenice in Venice, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, Teatro Real Madrid, Staatsoper Berlin, Theater an der Wien, Opéra Garnier in Paris, Théâtre de La Monnaie in Brussels, Opera Vlaanderen in Antwerp, Perm State Opera, Ho Chi Minh Opera House, the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the Händel Festival in Halle, the National Theatre Mannheim, the Opera de Rouen Normandie, Musikfest Bremen, and the Drottningholm Festival in Stockholm. 

His repertoire includes roles such as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Tamino in The Magic Flute, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Medoro in Orlando Paladino, Aret in Haydn’s Philemon und Baucis, Evandre in Gluck's Alceste, Ati in Gluck's Ariosto, Giova in Gluck's Bauci e Filemone, Clotarco in Rossini's Armida, Anfinomo in The Return of Ulysses, and Nerone in The Coronation of Poppea by Monteverdi. Additionally, he has performed numerous roles in works by composers such as Händel, Cavalli, and Scarlatti. 

In recent years, he has expanded into the romantic repertoire, including debuting as Erik in Wagner's The Flying Dutchman, Max in Weber's Der Freischütz, Aegisth in Strauss’s Elektra, and Guido Bardi in Zemlinsky’s A Florentine Tragedy. 

He has collaborated with many of the world’s leading conductors, including Rinaldo Alessandrini, Fabio Biondi, Ivor Bolton, Alessandro de Marchi, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Philippe Herreweghe, René Jacobs, Andrew Manze, Andrew Parrot, George Petrou, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Marc Soustrot, Karl-Heinz Steffens, Jörg Straube, Peter Szilvay, Eivind Gullberg Jensen, Ottaviano Tenerani, Lars-Erik ter Jung, and Tim Weiss. 

Staveland is a sought-after concert singer specializing in baroque repertoire. In the spring of 2015, he received glowing reviews for Vivaldi's L'oracolo in Messina at The Barbican in London. Since then, he has performed in Bragherona in Gassmann's L'opera seria at La Monnaie in Brussels; in Bach's St. John Passion in Brussels with B'Rock Baroque Orchestra Ghent; at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall with Monteverdi's Vespers; in Bach's St. Matthew Passion in Bergen; and in Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Bach's Christmas Oratorio with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra.
