Daniel Johansson
The Swedish tenor Daniel Johansson commenced this season with the title role in Tannhäuser at Theater und Philharmonie Essen. Daniel will this winter take on the title role in Parsifal for the first time at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. The spring include performances of Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Royal Swedish Opera and at the Norwegian National Opera.
The previous season, Daniel Johansson made his role debut as Pierre Bezukhov in Prokofiev’s War and Peace in Geneva which was followed by another role debut as treasure hunter Elis in Schreker’s Der Schatzgräber at Deutsche Oper in Berlin. In 2020/21 Daniel made his first appearance with the role of Tristan in Theater und Philharmonie Essen’s new production Tristan XS, a reduced version of Tristan und Isolde. Daniel has also sung Cavaradossi in a filmed concert version of Tosca at the Royal Swedish Opera, streamed on Operavision as well as Kungliga Operan Play.
The season of 2019/20 included the role of Fritz in Franz Schreker’s Der ferne Klang, staged by Christof Loy at the Royal Swedish Opera, followed by Don José in Carmen, on the same stage. Daniel was also a guest at Wiener Staatsoper where he appeared as Apollon/Dionysos in Orest.
Daniel Johansson has previously been a guest at the San Francisco Opera where he appeared as Matteo in Arabella and he has sung the title roles of Lohengrin and Hoffmann in Les Contes d’Hoffmann at Deutsche Oper. With the role of Don José, Daniel Johansson has made appearances at the Bregenzer Festspiele, Deutsche Oper, Semperoper in Dresden, at The Finland National Opera in Helsinki, at the Norwegian Opera and the Royal Swedish Opera. Other recently performed roles include Cavaradossi/Tosca, performed at the Norwegian Opera in Oslo, Malmö Opera and in Stockholm. Daniel has been a guest at Theater an der Wien as Siegmund in Die Walküre and in 2017 Daniel performed his first Lohengrin at the Musiktheater in Essen. The same year included as Narraboth in Salome and Froh in Das Rheingold with Mo Thielemann at Semperoper and Hoffmann in Les Contes d’Hoffmann at Bregenzer Festspiele.
At the Royal Swedish Opera Daniel has appeared in roles like Rodolfo in La Bohéme, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Count Loris Ipano in Fedora, Ein Sänger in Der Rosenkavalier and Tamino in Die Zauberflöte. Daniel has also sung Rodolfo in Helsinki and Oslo and Alfredo in La Traviata both in Stockholm, Oslo, Opera Hedeland and at Grand Théâtre de Genève. He has sung Tamino in Oslo and at Palau de les Arts in Valencia and Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore at the Göteborg Opera.
Daniel Johansson was previously a guest soloist in the ensemble at the Norwegian Opera where he sung several roles such as Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Narraboth in Salome, Macduff in Macbeth, Ein junger Seemann in Tristan und Isolde and as Telemaco in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria.
Early engagements have included the title role of Faust at Folkoperan, Stockholm and Lenskij in Eugene Onegin in Chautauqua, New York. He has sung Melot in the 2nd act of Tristan und Isolde in concerts with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Daniel Harding as well as with Orchestre de Paris and Christoph Eschenbach. Daniel sung Florestan in Fidelio in concert with Malmö Symphony Orchestra. He appeared at the opening of the new Danish Radio Concert Hall singing Mozart’s Coronation Mass (Adam Fischer) and the Shepherd in Oedipus Rex with the Swedish RSO (Esa-Pekka Salonen) in Stockholm and Brussels. He has sung the tenor part in the chamber version of Das Lied von der Erde in Sweden and Finland and Verdi Requiem with the Royal Swedish Orchestra.
Daniel Johansson was born in the province of Småland in southern Sweden and studied at the University College of Opera in Stockholm. In 2007 Daniel Johansson won the 1st prize in the Gösta Winbergh Award. He has received several scholarships from the Swedish Royal Musical Academy, the Anders Wall Foundation and others. Daniel Johansson holds the 2009 Birgit Nilsson Scholarship and in 2012 he was awarded the 1st prize in the Wilhelm Stenhammar Competition.
In 2018 Daniel Johansson was appointed Court singer by HM King Carl XVI Gustaf. In 2021 Daniel Johansson received the medal Litteris et Artibus from HM King Carl XVI Gustaf, for his outstanding accomplishments as an opera singer.
