Ballet in the
open air

A short metro train ride from the crowds of Oslo Central Station transports you to another world in the beautiful Linderud Manor in Groruddalen. A stroll up the avenue of linden trees and into the historic garden will give you the chance to experience the Norwegian National Ballet in a production where ballet meets mystique. The evening starts with music in the garden, and then the dancers enter the stage.

Supernatural beings and an impossible love

Giselle and Les Sylphides are two of the most frequently performed romantic ballets. You will get to see the second act of Giselle, otherwise known as the White Act. The setting here is so beautiful that it almost takes your breath away, with rows of dancers dressed in white. These are the Wilis – spectres of virgins who dance young men to death.

One of them is Giselle. She tries to save her beloved Albrecht who, full of regret, has come to visit her grave. Giselle has been described as the ideal role for a ballerina, and it is now being danced by Melissa Hough, Maiko Nishino and Grete Sofie Borud Nybakken.

In the Scottish Highlands, James falls head over heels in love with a sylph, an air spirit, who he follows out into the forest. The extract that you will see is a beautiful dance full of soaring jetés. The sylph is showing off her world, while James tries to approach the winged being who continually slips out of his arms.

Classics and world premiere

You will also get the chance to see new dances by Anaïs Touret and Kaloyan Boyadjiev. Both are dancers and choreographers. In Touret’s work, 12 men dance to Japanese drums that were originally used to put fear into the enemy in battle. In total contrast to the ethereal beauty of Giselle and Les Sylphides, here we have savagery and untamed forces at play.

In Boyadjiev’s work, eight women dance to new music by the American-Russian composer Lera Auerbach.
